Why is my electric underfloor heating not warm enough? ›

The floor temperature settings on the thermostat may be incorrect. Check the thermostat settings ensuring that it is controlling the floor surface temperature and that the set target and limiting temperatures are correct.

The button on bottom of the 3IE (button 7) is the power button. You can turn off your thermostat and Warmup underfloor heating system by holding down this button for 3 seconds. You can turn it on again by holding it down for another 3 seconds.

Correctly setting up your underfloor heating temperatures

The best idea to maximise the results of your heating system is to have 2 “ON” times with a comfort temperature and 2 “OFF” times with setback temperatures which is normally 4°c lower than your comfort temperature.

Floor isn't getting up to the desired temperature

If your electric underfloor heating isn't warm enough, you may need to adjust your thermostat settings or check the system's power output. This could also be down to the insulation in your home – check this before installation.

The heat output of an underfloor heating system can be significantly increased by installing high-quality UFH floor insulation alongside your system. Insulation improves a system's performance, improving heat-up times and ensuring the heat produced by the system will not escape the space.

Make sure the proper voltage is wired from your panel to the thermostat. The amperage of the heating system should match the amperage coming from the panel. Also check to make sure that all wiring is correct by having your electrician check the manual.

You should see the flame icon on the screen and hear the thermostat click when it switches the heating on. After about 15 minutes you should feel the floor getting warm under the towel. If you do, you know that your underfloor heating system is all good and working as it should.

It can take a while to get used to the difference, so don't worry if things feel a little strange at first. As a general rule of thumb, your heated floor shouldn't feel hot - it should just not feel cold.

What is the best temperature for electric underfloor heating? ›

Electric underfloor heating systems can reach higher temperatures than hydronic (wet) systems but for both types of systems, a thermostat setting of between 21°C and 25°C is usually ideal. To achieve these temperatures, the actual heat output from the underfloor heating system will be approximately twice that number.

Temperature Control

The most efficient way to run underfloor heating involves maintaining a consistent temperature tailored to time-of-day needs. In the morning, setting your thermostat to around 21 degrees Celsius provides a warm start to the day.

80 to 85 degrees will provide enough heat to warm your entire home, without causing damage to your floors or furniture. Although, if you have a forced air system, you should set the thermostat to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This will prevent the water from getting too hot and damaging your floors.

The key difference between 150w and 200w electric heating is the warm-up time. Essentially, the 200w mats or loose wire cables will reach the set temperature more quickly. Therefore, serving better as a primary heat source than the lower-wattage option.

At only 6mm thick, SuperFOIL UF (SFUF) is an ideal solution when a thermal barrier is needed but floor depth is limited. Made up of 13 layers of laminated foil, reflective aluminium, thermo foam and polyethylene, SFUF will massively reduce downward heat loss without occupying valuable floor depth .

Heat loss in the subfloor or the space below causes floors to heat up more slowly. A slower heating time takes longer to reach the target temperature. This is due to your heating system being installed over a concrete slab or an unheated space without insulation boards.
