Oatmeal tastes so good on its own, you don't even need to add sugar.

- Kristin Chenoweth

A few days back, Vidya, who blogs at Traditionally Modern Food, contacted me about a guest post for her blog, I agreed. What was so special about that? At that time, this was going to be my first ever guest post for another blogger.

When she contacted me about doing a guest post, I had no clue how to go about doing it. I had heard about bloggers doing guest posts for one another, but having not done one myself, I had no idea what to do. But then, I said yes 🙂 .

And then comes the next challenge. She wants me to do a toddler recipe!

Toddler Recipe??

OMG!! My dealings with a toddler ended several years back. I got back to Vidya trying to find whether I had a deadline to meet. She gave me the freedom to work at my pace. Alrighty. I at least have time to come up with a recipe. Phew!

I remember starting Sonshine's solid foods with raagi porridge and then later moving onto rice and vegetables puree. Once Sonshine realized that adult food is tastier than the bland (well, almost bland) puree that I was feeding him, he resisted eating the purees. So, we switched him to the regular food at home.

So, when Vidya asked me to work on a toddler recipe, she gave me another shot at reliving my Sonshine's toddler days. I did not want to create some puree based dish but I still wanted something that was easy to prepare. Now, whoever has dealt with a toddler knows that the parents do need the energy to handle and entertain the toddler rather than spend hours in the kitchen preparing dishes.

So, I decided to base my recipe on a simple, yet very tasty drink called Sharjah Shake. This is banana milk shake that is very famous in Calicut, a city in Kerala. My friend, PD, introduced meto this delicious drink when we had visited Calicut back during my college days.My first taste of this drink was from a road side eatery specializing in this drink. Frozen milk is blended with bananas and a malt based milk powder with sugar added for sweetness - thatis Sharjah Shake for you.Wondering the history behind the name of the drink? Read about it here.

Since it was a toddler recipe, instead of using frozen milk, I used regular cold 2% milk. I decided to add some cooked leftover oatmeal and blend it with the milk and bananas.

I love oatmeal banana milkshakebecause, it is

  • Easy to prepare.
  • Filling & flavorful.
  • Nutritious.
  • Balanced.

There is no more toddler stuff in my family (dealing with more pre-tween stuff these days). Even so, I serve thisto my Sonshine as breakfast milkshake and also along with his after-school snack. When he finishes the milk shake, I know, I have served him something delicious and at the same time nutritious. This is like a perfect healthy drink with the goodness of oatmeal, fruit and milk.

After we were done with the photo shoot and his modelling time, it was niceto see Sonshine relaxing with the Oatmeal banana milkshake while reading his favorite book. It was a beautiful spring day when we did the photo shoot and what better way to chillax than with a book in hand. 🙂

XO.

Notes

1. I have used refrigerated 2% milk. If you are hesitant to give refrigerated milk, boil the milk and cool it down to room temperature.[br]2. I have used the Nestle Malted Milk powder. If you have Horlicks or something similar, you can use that.[br]3. Read the ingredients and the allergen information if you are using the malted milk powder for your kid.[br]4. Adjust the sweetener - Sugar/Honey - to taste. This is a good recipe to use up those ripe (browned) bananas which everybody is hesitant to eat. The quantity of sugar depends on the sweetness of the banana.[br]4. I make it like milk shake, but if you like it thicker, reduce the quantity of milk.[br]5. This recipe yields about 600-700 ml of milk shake. Serving size is assumed to be approximately 150-200 ml.[br]6. The nutrition values are approximate and should be used as a guidance only. No added sugar is considered while calculating the nutrition information.

This one is definitely a winner all the way around... and not talking about Sharjah Shake, everytime my bunch of cousins used to go out without me to Calicut, they would have this and when I am around, we would never have it...
